Darude is the stage name of Finnish producer Toni-Ville Virtanen, who broke through in 1999 with the trance anthem "Sandstorm" and has spent 25+ years touring uplifting, festival-ready electronic music. He's since become an internet-culture fixture thanks to the enduring "Darude - Sandstorm" meme, which he's embraced rather than fought. PNW ravers get both a nostalgia trip and a genuinely skilled trance/progressive DJ set.
Popularity
We haven't looked up Darude's popularity yet.
How this is measured
An absolute, national (US) measure — not a ranking against the other artists on this site. We take the strongest of three open signals: ListenBrainz listens, English Wikipedia pageviews, and the number of Wikipedia language editions that have an article. The strongest one wins, so a signal we couldn't read never drags the result down. Bucket 1 means measured and small. Unrated never means small — it means we don't have the numbers.
